AngioFE is a plug-in feature for FEBio that simulates the mechanical regulation of angiogenesis, the process by which new blood vessels sprout and grow from existing vasculature. During angiogenesis, neovessel sprouts apply traction, deforming and remodeling the extracellular matrix. Growth and the topology of the new vascular network are regulated by this mechanical interaction. AngioFE simulates this process by coupling a discrete growth model of angiogenic microvessels which generate stresses within the matrix. The resulting deformation is calculated using FEBio, and the kinematics of this deformation return regulatory feedback to the growth model which is used to calculate the next growth step.
