The Musculoskeletal Research Laboratories (MRL) were founded at the University of Utah in 2000 by Dr. Jeffrey A. Weiss. We are affiliated with the Departments of Bioengineering, Orthopedics and the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute. Originally, research at the MRL focused on the structure and function of normal and healing ligaments. The scope of research has expanded considerably over the last 10 years to include the study of other soft tissues and diarthrodial joints, as well as cardiac mechanics and angiogenesis. Scientific investigations at the MRL combine techniques from a range of disciplines including biomechanics, biochemistry, molecular biology and imaging. In all areas, a combination of computational and experimental approaches is used to answer questions and solve problems that could not be addressed otherwise.
The research and educational missions of the MRL are funded with an annual budget of over $1 million. The MRL employs scientists, engineers and software developers and educates undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows.
