| 03/01/2004 - Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation |
Drs. Chris Peters (Orthopedics) and Jeff Weiss were awarded a grant entitled, "Comparative Stress Analysis of Hip Dysplasia". The grant is for $100,000 over two years, beginning July 2004. The project will examine the biomechanics of the hip in normal and dysplastic patients, specifically focusing on patients with "traditional" dysplasia versus those with a dysplastic retroverted acetabulum. A special thanks to Andy Anderson for all of his hard work on the prelminary studies and the writing of the original grant and its revision.

| 03/01/2004 - NIH Grant Competitive Renewal |
The competetive renewal of our first NIH grant, entitled "Origins of Elasticity and Viscoelasticity of Knee Ligaments", received a priority score of 157 and a percentile of 4.9! We expect to receive a Notice of Grant Award shortly. This grant is for $1.5 million over 5 years, beginning September 2004.

| 03/01/2004 - New NIH Grant |
Rich Debski (U. Pittsburgh) and Jeff Weiss were awarded a new NIH grant, entitled, "Glenohumeral Joint Stability: Role of the Capsule". The grant is for $1.1 million over four years and should begin in April 2004. The project will utilize a combined experimental and computational approach to characterize the structure and function of the glenohumeral capsule in clinically relevant joint positions. Congratulations to Rich especially for landing his first NIH grant!

| 03/01/2004 - Taylor and Francis Prize |
Jeff Weiss and co-authors received the Taylor & Francis Prize for "outstanding innovation in computer methods in biomechanics & biomedical engineering" at the 6th Annual Symposium on Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering. This prize was awarded for the paper:
Mechanical Simulation of Multicellular Structures with the Material Point Method
Yuan Zhang, James E. Guilkey, James B. Hoying, Jeffrey A. Weiss

| 12/01/2003 - New MRL Undergraduate Student |
Please welcome Marianne Bergquist to the MRL. Marianne will be working with the NIH Knee Group.
|
| 12/01/2003 - Membership in SCI Institute |
Jeff Weiss was appointed as an official Member of the SCI Institute (see his shiny new faculty web page on their site - thanks Erik!). The benefits of membership in the SCI Institute to MRL members are significant. The SCI Institute houses an extremely talented and diverse group of researchers, and the Institute has substantial computational and administrative infrastructure. To focus on perhaps the most immediately relevant benefit to MRL students and postdocs, for a mere $10 a month you can join the SCI Institute Food Fund and have access to their excellent automatic espresso machine, which is stocked with Peet's Coffee. Additional food items include regular dairy deliveries to support all those lattes and cappuccinos, soft drinks and the candy and junk food you need to keep you focused on your computer monitor well into the evening.

| 12/01/2003 - 6th Symposium on Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engnring |
Both MRL abstracts were accepted as podium presentations. Congratulations to first authors Yuan Zhang and Andy Anderson! Andy will be traveling to Madrid in February to give his presentation. Jeff Weiss will be giving an invited lecture at the meeting entitled "Strain Measurement with Deformable Images".

| 11/01/2003 - Whitaker Foundation Transition Grant |
Professor Richard Debski received word that his Whitaker Foundation Transition Grant entitled, "Function of Capsuloligamentous Structures at the Glenohumeral Joint", was funded. This award will provide an additional one year of support to Dr. Debski and to the MRL as a subcontract from the University of Pittsburgh. Congratulations Rich!

| 11/01/2003 - Abstracts for 2003 Orthopaedic Research Socie |
The MRL had 4 of its 6 abstracts accepted for presentation at the Orthopaedic Research Society Meeting in San Francisco in March 2003. Enjoy San Francisco!
|
| 11/01/2003 - Graduate Student Travel Award |
Andy Anderson received a graduate student travel award from the Graduate School at the University of Utah to attend the ASME Conference - congrats!

| 08/01/2003 - Will's Ms Defense |
Will Newman has successfully defended his MS Thesis entitled, "Biomechanics of the inferior glenohumeral ligament of the shoulder during the simple translation test". Congratulations Will and best of luck in pharmacy school!
|
| 08/01/2003 - Rosy's Ms Defense |
Rosalina Das has successfully defended her MS Thesis entitled, "MCL Healing at Early Time Points: Biomechanics and Gene Expression". Congratulations Rosy and best of luck in your future endeavors!
|
| 08/01/2003 - Darpa Grant |
Chris Johnson (PI), Greg Jones, Martin Berzins, Mike Kirby, Ross Whitaker and Jeff Weiss have received a grant as part of a large DARPA project. The project will develop three-dimensional electromechanical simulations of cardiac physiology. This Phase I project is for > $550,000 total costs for 18 months and may result in an additional, larger Phase II project. Congratulations!
